Remembering John “Jack” Noonan

My old childhood friend Jack Noonan died last week of cancer, leaving behind his wife Kristen, four beautiful children, one grandchild, and many close loving friends. I was honored by Jack’s family with the privilege of photographing his funeral. The entire day I felt inspired by the love, friendship, and grace of all the firefighters and family present. This is a testament to the person Jack was. He dedicated his life to helping others as a decorated Lynn firefighter. He was a dedicated lifelong friend to many who were also graduates of “Kiley University.” I will remember Jack simply as a nice man, goodhearted and generous, funny and strong. I am in the process of creating a memory book for the family. Here I present several of the photographs for the book.

I am in the process of going through about 100,000 digital photos that I have taken over the past four years and got sidetracked tonight. I found these images that I took of a family in 2010 at Jenness Beach at dusk on a perfect summer evening. I couldn’t resist playing with these photographs and applying filters to them just for fun. I remember being enthralled with this beautiful little girl in pink, along with her parents and big sister. Her parents allowed me to photograph them at will and I promised them a CD of the images which they enjoyed. The best things in life, for me, are moments like these. I was with my love, Debbie, at a beautiful beach with warm water, knowing I would be eating french fries soon, enjoying the beauty of this gorgeous family. This is a good blog post for January 11 I think!

Bitterly cold weather is coning in soon, but today was perfect. Had a nice ride on the bike, then took out my new 85mm 1.4 to test out the sharpness. I stayed in my neighborhood and found some nice subjects.

I saw this cat in the field and she let me get close enough for one shot as dusk approached.

I remember ...having the privilege of photographing flautist Rhonda Larson in concert. To see and hear one of the world's best up close was extraordinary!

I remember...Rev Liz Walker being welcomed into the Roxbury Presbyterian Church as the new minister as Rev Hurmon Hamilton stands at the pulpit for the last time.

I remember...Marcia being so gracious to allow me to take one of my very favorite portraits of the year.

I remember...taking pictures at the Myopia Dog Sled races when suddenly this horse and rider galloped by and was gone in a second.

I remember...meeting Emily Newall for the first time. It is a privilege to be able to photograph my friend's children.

I remember...going to NYC and having a ball with Rocco as we grazed our way across the city. We met famous NYC photographer Louis Mendes on the street.

I remember...the gorgeous summer days in Provincetown, where people are actually insulted if you don't take their picture!

I remember...these two cute kids in Ptown waiting for their parents to be done shopping.

I remember...Motif #2 in Essex, Mass on a beautiful warm summer night while eating french fries at Farnham's Restaurant.

I remember...taking my favorite photo of Debbie at the beach on a lake in Glacier National Park. We saw evidence on the beach that led us to believe that we were likely being watched by nearby bears.

I remember...falling in love with this border collie at the Glacier Trailhead Cabins in Montana.

I remember...taking a quick candid of Mary Jean and Jonathan, the last photo of the shoot.

I remember...meeting this Great Dane at the Boston Public Garden and being amazed at how beautiful she was. It was as though I had never seen a Great Dane before!

I remember...stopping at The Cathedral of the Holy Cross and finding the spanish confirmation ceremony was just beginning. So I took this photo of Cardinal O'Malley in the procession.

I remember...Mr Munroe at the Derby Square Bookstore in Salem. This is the store where if you take one book out of the stack, you risk your life!

I remember...listening to The Messiah at the Tremont St Baptist Church and being in awe of the beauty of the church and the music.

I often have the privilege of photographing children and young people. There are times when it all “clicks,” when the shoot is fun and easy, and I am aware that something special is happening. Then I headed to hear The Messiah at the gorgeous Tremont Street Baptist Church in Boston. Had lunch at the world famous The Sevens pub on Charles St where Omar makes the best Reuben in Boston.
